Redland Garden | Homestead, Florida
Envisioned as a seasonal retreat for clients who winter in the agricultural region of South Florida known as the Redlands, this garden estate is located approximately 20 miles southwest of downtown Miami. The grounds are situated in the heart of tropical fruit country, surrounded by hundreds of acres of nurseries, field crops and fruit orchards including avocado, mango and lychee trees.
The single family residence, designed by Florida architect Charles Harrison Pawley, marries the traditional forms of colonial Caribbean vernacular with the more contemporary details found in modern tropical architecture. The garden hosts a collection of winter blooming perennials, displays of seasonal color and a selection of palm and tree species native to Florida with many species indigenous to the islands of Madagascar and Southern Japan. |
The existing pool terrace of this residence was formerly a piazza-scale patio composed of expansive paved areas which lacked intimacy and shade from the South Florida sun. In response to this design challenge, the design team carved a series of interconnected garden rooms, creating pockets of dappled shade framed by new palm plantings with informal groupings of subtropical plants. The design team weaved a walking path through the garden spaces resulting in a series of intimate outdoor rooms with the opportunity to explore and discover a collector's garden.
The master plan and landscape design for this project were a collaborative effort between Carlos Somoza | Landscape Architecture and the design build firm of DDM Horticulture, Inc. |
