Tour I: Exclusive Private Gardens of Miami
As part of its annual members conference, the American Public Gardens Association recognized Oak Garden in Coconut Grove, Florida to be highlighted as one of Miami’s most distinguished neighborhoods and private estates. Many of the gardens featured landscapes of historical significance and were opened to the public for the first time during this exclusive event. The tour showcased a diverse range of garden styles - from newly restored historic properties to bold, contemporary designs - each demonstrating unique approaches to working with South Florida’s rich palette of subtropical plants. Guided by The Villagers, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to the preservation of historic sites and gardens across South Florida, the tours highlighted both design excellence and cultural heritage. Founded in 1966, The Villagers celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2016 and continues to champion the restoration of the region’s most treasured outdoor spaces. |
Tour II: Orchids, Organics & Tropical Paradise
The Brooks' Garden, a ten-acre property situated in the heart of tropical fruit country, is an exceptional private garden nestled within the Redlands' community of nurseries, field crops and fruit orchards. The American Public Gardens Association recognized the private estate as one of South Florida's unique tropical gardens. The single-family residence, designed by Florida architect Charles Harrison Pawley, marries the traditional forms of colonial Caribbean vernacular with the more contemporary details found in modern tropical architecture. The garden hosts a collection of winter-blooming perennials, displays of seasonal color, and a selection of palms and cycads. The master plan and landscape design were a collaborative effort between Debra DeMarco, DDM Horticultural Services, Inc. and Carlos Somoza Landscape Architecture. |

Join Miami architect George Lopez, garden designer Carlos Somoza, and their client, as they provide a private tour and share insight behind the creation of a modern subtropical garden. The garden is set beneath the canopy of 100-year old live oak trees in Coconut Grove's historic Silver Bluff neighborhood. Oak Garden provides a case study in the preservation of inherent site characteristics and the introduction of a modern design vocabulary through the use of indigenous materials, native plants and a clean, contemporary aesthetic.
